Chosen Research Question:
In what ways do cultural and social factors influence the design and perception of chairs within human-centered design frameworks?
- This question examines how diverse cultural contexts shape the functionality, aesthetics, and significance of chairs, impacting the user experience and design decisions.
THE SOLUTION:
In many Western societies, we gradually lose the ability to sit on the ground and get back up. This project aims to challenge that trend by drawing inspiration from cultures with healthier hips and knees and the flexibility of children. As a designer passionate about furniture, I wanted to create a piece that encourages movement and mobility rather than dependence on traditional seating.
The Elysian chair is designed to help users of all ages regain the strength and flexibility needed to sit on the floor and rise independently. While it offers support, the best results are achieved when used alongside exercise, stretching, and professional guidance, like physical therapy.
Once users have regained mobility, the Elysian can still serve as a functional chair or be flipped on its side to become a table—offering versatility and longevity. This project is not just about furniture; it’s about promoting strength, flexibility, and mobility at any age.
